The Open Society Foundation for Albania (OSFA), in cooperation with the Municipality of Tirana (MoT) and the Social Action and Innovation Centre (KMOP) is implementing the three-year project titled: “Inclusive EduJobs – Towards Context Relevant Policies and Services Enhancing Employability and Educational Outcomes of Roma and Egyptians in Albania”.

This project is funded by the European Union under the IPA 2019 Programme, ref. EuropeAid/170610/DD/ACT/AL. The purpose of the project is to improve the inclusion of women and men, boys and girls from Roma and Egyptian communities in Albania by strengthening the capacities of the municipalities to establish and deliver inclusive services to citizens in the area of employment and education.

The first phase of the project is under implementation in Tirana municipality, where 6 (six) employment and educational intervention models are being piloted through sub-granting schemes, except for the farming component, which is being implemented in Elbasan (Shushica).

“Inclusive EduJobs” will additionally provide 2 (two) subgrants for the second phase of the project, one subgrant for the continuation in Shushica and another subgrant to be implemented in another Municipality (Vlora or Shkodra).

The employment model related to the farming component, currently under implementation in Shushica village, Elbasan municipality, aims to provide agricultural support to the residents of the Egyptian community in the area. This support enables income generation through farming on their own lands.

The agricultural support aim is to improve their performance in managing the farming process, enhancing their access to the market and increasing their incomes.

The farming support model in Shushica, part of the first phase of sub-granting, is made through an initiative which actively empowers Egyptian families in Shushica to maximise local agricultural production, generate income, and enhance their farming skills.

In the first phase, 15 Egyptian families established a 2-hectare greenhouse, cultivated various crops, and received specialized training, including olive cultivation. The sub-grant provided them with essential resources like seedlings, fertilizers, pesticides, a 200 m2 greenhouse, and storage containers.

Additionally, technical land analysis was conducted to identify suitable products considering market prices, and the farmers collaboratively unified their land.

For detailed information and guidelines, potential applicants are encouraged to visit the project’s website publication. This call for proposal regards the replication phase of the project in Shushica, Elbasan municipality, wherein the main focus is to increase the employment sustainability in farming by reinforcing the farming support for Egyptian farmers in Shushica along with the capacity to absorb funding from government agricultural support schemes.

Sustainable employment opportunities are targeted through the employment of community farmers in Shushica within a local farming mini-cooperative established during the pilot phase of the project. In the second phase, “Inclusive EduJobs” will provide 2 (two) subgrants, one for the continuation of the first phase in Shushica and one for the replication of the first phase in one of the municipalities: Vlora or Shkodra.
